We all want what’s best for our kids, but we don’t often think about a room makeover as a gift we can give our children. Kids need a space to call their own too, and what better way to teach them about making a home than to let them experiment?
Just picture your kid’s face when you tell them they can decorate their room any way they want. Yes, they will probably pick a colour you don’t love. No, it will not go with the rest of the house, but just think of the benefits:
They will get a sense of ownership over their space. We don’t guarantee this will translate into them cleaning their room, but there is something to be said for giving them the feeling that this is theirs.
Most kids love colour, so let them go wild and pick a vivid hue. Sure, it may look like they took interior decorating advice from one of their favourite cartoon characters, but you’re only young once.
Letting your children choose how to decorate their space teaches them to express themselves and how to make a home.
It will teach them what they truly love can change over the years and that nothing in life is permanent. It also shows you support them to be wacky and fearless and trying new things adds spice to life.
It’s a great project to take on together. Helping them pick a paint colour but letting them know the final decision is all theirs helps kids develop confidence and trust in themselves.
